Dear West Sylvan families,
Happy Friday, WSMS family members! We had some fun this week with school picture day, and our ELA and Math classes have been engaging in their bi-yearly benchmark MAP testing. Scholars take the MAP test (in English and Math) twice yearly. The first test at the start of each year is a baseline to assess skills and gaps in skills. Another MAP test occurs after Winter Break, typically in January, and that second test is intended to measure growth over the first semester of school.
Please calendar the first “Early Release” day this year, which is approaching on Wednesday, September 25th. All Scholars are released at 1:45PM, and Staff are in meetings at 2:00PM, meaning we will not be available to supervise any students who are not picked up on time. Buses will drop students off two hours earlier than usual.
Future Early Release dates are as follows, for your planning: October 23 - November 20 - December 18 - February 26 - March 19 - April 23 - May 21
Also, this week we completed our first round of 10-day drops, meaning if Scholars have not been present at school for ten consecutive school days, we unenroll them, per state law. Our overall school enrollment has reduced dramatically this school year, with far fewer sixth graders enrolling than anticipated. Enrollment by grade and demographic information for our school is below for reference.
Communications related to the upcoming school year will continue to come from both our West Sylvan and èßäapp¹ÙÍø district team with regular updates, weekly or bi-weekly. Enjoy your weekend!
Go Wolfpack!

When Beckham Weatherby picks up his tuba, the rest of the world falls away.
“I don’t get that nervous and I don’t get stage fright at all,” he said. “I guess I got lucky with how my body reacts to performing in front of crowds.”
Which is something the McDaniel High School junior has done quite a bit of lately. Not only is he a member of the prestigious èßäapp¹ÙÍø Youth Philharmonic (PYP) and the PYP conservatory orchestra, but he recently earned first prize in the tuba solo performance category at the Oregon State Solo Music Championships.
The first things you notice when you walk into Ellie Jensen’s classroom at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt Elementary School are peace and warmth. Then you hear the laughter of children. Then you just might see two posters hanging on the walls that tell you a great deal about the kind of teacher she has been for the past 50 years. The posters simply say, “Leave a little sparkle wherever you go” and “Be a friend.”
Jensen, known as “Miss Ellie” to the hundreds of students she has taught in her half a century as a èßäapp¹ÙÍø educator, can’t help but light up a room. And she is a friend to all children.
We dare you to drive by the Mainspring Food Pantry on the corner of 82nd Avenue and Fremont and not do a double take. Or a triple take.
Students from McDaniel High School’s art-focused Career Technical Education (CTE) class have spent the last four weeks turning the exterior walls of the pantry into one, huge, joyful mural as part of the course’s exploration of climate justice and community engagement.
A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.
He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.
“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”

Forecasting for the 2024-25 school year is concluding! Students have been selecting their choices through Advisory classes. For World Languages, if a student takes French or Spanish in 7th grade, they would continue in that same World Language through 8th grade, as mastering the content in 8th grade then results in High School credits. Once High School begins, students can always choose to explore a new language at LHS, as they have so many more options to choose from, too!
The materials can be reviewed at the links below, so that you may help your Scholar make informed decisions for next school year.

For families with students entering 6th Grade in the 2024-25 school year
to share some of your course preferences with us
as we plan for next year's schedules.
This next year, all èßäapp¹ÙÍø Middle Schools will be using a SEVEN course/day model. Depending on course designs, they will be offered as full year, semester, or quarter-long classes. The following courses will be required, in order to meet our district and Middle Years Programs.
In addition, all electives need to fall under the MYP descriptions for "DESIGN" and "ART". All students will be expected to take at least one elective from each category, which will automatically be included in schedules, excluding BAND, CHOIR, or AVID.
MYP Elective courses will include ART, S.T.E.A.M., MUSIC, and possibly one or two others that are yet to be determined, based on staffing. Band or Choir will be taken as a full year elective and count for 2 semesters, leaving one semester of another elective available.
