Hello all, a quick reminder and ask...students are NOT allowed to use wheelies at school (the shoes that turn into roller skates). These are a cool invention, no doubt, but very distracting in the building! If students have wheelies, they may use them outside at recess as long as they don't cause problems. (If they start causing problems, that will have to change.) So, for now...NO WHEELIES in the building. Thanks! If your child chooses to use their wheelies inside, they will need to call home and ask for someone to bring them a different pair of shoes. This is a natural consequence and, hopefully, won't need to be used. PLEASE remind your students, and we will remind them, too! Thanks so much, Vestal peace. Ms. Sabrina

Hello Vestal Community!
Welcome to yet another Thursday! I want to start by stating what many of you know to be true…..we have had a lot of illnesses this week- both adults and students, myself included. I do not think there has been a year where I personally have missed so many days due to illness(Much less other life events). We really miss your kids when they are at home and we know your kids miss their teachers when we are out, BUT we do appreciate people staying home/keeping sick kiddos at home. It truly is best for our whole community.
Tomorrow is Vestal Spirit Day! Yeah! Wear Vestal gear, Vestal colors, or clothing that supports our vision and mission of Social Justice!
Fresh Food Market and Spinny Wheel are also tomorrow!
Next week we have a busy docket of evening events-
Feb. 11th- PTA mtg.!
Feb. 12th- Immigration Q and A at Lee Elem. 5:30-7:00
This evening is specifically for families who are impacted by their own immigration status.
I had shared earlier that this would be a good event to come if you are an ally/in support, BUT the more we have been learning about these new concerns, the more we have been encouraged to keep it only to folks who need to be there or are advocating for someone specific. We will keep everyone updated on more opportunities for solidarity.
If you have questions, please contact our Social Worker Em Rochford.
Feb. 13th- Winter Arts Showcase (this is a new event for Vestal!) 5:30-7pm. See full schedule below.

Arts Spotlight:
Hello Dear Vestal Community! Our Bees have been busy in art class this past month, with MOST ceramics out of the kiln and finally ready to go home, some after our event next week (see below). 1st, 3rd and 4th grades have been working on weaving projects. 5th graders are ALMOST done with their amazing spoof product stuffies. 2nd grade has been finishing their ceramic pieces, and will have some awesome chalk pastel works to show. Kindergarten just finished ceramics, and created the most adorable “love birds” this week.
The big news: Please join us at Vestal next Thursday, 2/13, from 5:30-7pm for our premier Winter Arts Showcase! Thanks to Mr. Williams, who has organized this special night of music and art at Vestal. We are so proud of our students, and want to give families and friends the opportunity to come see their students perform, as well as to see their beautiful artwork on display. Come to see all grades perform, or stop by to see your student(s)’ musical performance in the auditorium at these times:
5:30-5:45-Kindergarten and 1st Grade
6:00-6:15-2nd and 3rd Grades
6:30-6:45-4th and 5th Grades
Student artwork from all grades will be displayed for the whole evening in the gym and the main hallway. Please come to appreciate all the incredible talent we have at Vestal. Thank you in advance for the awesome parent and teacher volunteers helping to make things run smoothly.
Speaking of volunteers, I have been thrilled to have help in my Kindergarten classes from families! Please reach out to me if you would like to help out in art class; I am always happy to have extra hands in the art room.
Hope to see you all next week!
Ms. Breaux
In meteorological terms, èßäapp¹ÙÍø’s first big weather event of 2024 was the definition of a perfect storm. Frigid temperatures and high winds combined with snow and ice to bring down tree limbs, close roads, scramble traffic, freeze pipes, and knock out power for tens of thousands of residents.
It was a metaphorical perfect storm for èßäapp¹ÙÍø as well. Fallen trees cut power to multiple schools and others have suffered water damage from broken pipes. Lack of heat was also a problem, and impassable roads, paired with snowed-in and icy parking lots, made it impossible for buses to run safely. Those same conditions limited how the district’s facilities and operations teams can even assess the scope of the issues, let alone begin working on solutions. And icy sidewalks meant walkers have no safe route to school.
This week could bring similar conditions to the èßäapp¹ÙÍø area, and èßäapp¹ÙÍø’s School Closure Team is ready to meet the challenge. The team convenes regularly during inclement weather to take all of the above into careful consideration. By now, families are quite familiar with how the district communicates these decisions. What’s perhaps less known is how district leaders arrive at such decisions in the first place.
As part of our district's focus on events that center belonging, equity, and inclusion, we have been screening a series of films that we hope will challenge our perceptions about what is possible in the systems we create for our children with disabilities.
The next film in the series is “Champions,” which will screen on Saturday February 8th at 2:00 PM at Lincoln High School. This event will also include first-hand testimonials from èßäapp¹ÙÍø students.
This movie highlights the journey of a basketball coach who leads a team of players with intellectual disabilities. Through humor and heartfelt moments, the movie emphasizes the strengths, individuality, and value each player brings to the team and how inclusion enriches communities and creates positive, supportive environments.
Staff, families, and community members are all invited. Parking is free and light refreshment will be provided. We hope to see you there!
We’re thrilled to announce that two èßäapp¹ÙÍø teachers were recently awarded the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
Krishnan Ranjani, a teacher of advanced mathematics and Career and Technical Education (CTE) computer systems at Lincoln High School and Nick Nohner, a computer sciences and data sciences teacher at Ida B. Wells High School, were both selected for the honor which is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The award recognizes outstanding educators for their contributions to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Each awardee will receive a certificate signed by President Joe Biden and a $10,000 award from NSF. Awardees will also travel to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony at a future date.
Congratulations to these two exceptional teachers!
